Full Version: Beginners use of Telescope for Stars ...

Hi,

I have been using Telescope for PokerStars unders the trial program. There is no question I can see the immediate benefits of the concepts and functionality of Telescope, but I must be doing something wrong.

Before I get into the overall specifics I've noticed, possibly these deal killers are answered in detailed setup/usage instructions or a thread posting that I have been unable to find.

Specifically, I have noticed the following and do not know how to correct them:

1. If I have two different categories of tables, for example a 10/20 limit table under 'Medium' and a 15/30 table under 'High,' it seems that I need to run two separate scans of each category, i.e. High and Medium, to get table data.

And, therefore, I lose the data of the first category when I run the second category.

2. As a subset of above, if I am only interested in the 10/20 limit under 'Medium,' the scan still goes through all the tables and, in my trial, the computer and therefore Poker Stars is pretty much unusable until the complete category scan, in this example 'Medium' is finished for all the limit tables defined. Very slow and cumbersome. And, again, I lose any scan history from another category, i.e.; the scan I might have done previously for 15/30 in 'High'

3. Again, a separate usage issue mentioned in 2., above, is that whenever a scan is being done, the computer is basically locked until Telescope finishes its scan, which can take minutes, but seems like hours since it is very difficult to do anything else on the computer while the scan is in process.

Ideas? Suggestions as how can I learn, educate myself as a new user?

What am I missing?

Thanks.

John
I'm just a user fwiw

1. how about using "all" in lobby, then the *stars* table filter to select the two stakes "10/20" and 15/30" (then obv select those two in the "filter" of telescope)? I think telescope needs to see the tables you want scanned, in the poker client window, and because the high/med dividing line is for the 2 games you play I can't think of another way to do this

2. I might be wrong here but if you do the above (i.e., only 10/20 and 15/30 tbls are showing in poker client), if you then change the telescope filter for *only* 10/20, it still chugs slowly through the poker client's 15/30 windows? or does it go much faster through those (until it hits the 10/20s)?

3. only sven can say if your db(s) size is an issue (from a speedup standpoint) but I've seen him say that because of how the stars client works there really isn't a way around this (afaik); you could try "use cache" under the options of telescope but that would only speed things up a bit, not give you any more control over your computer while it's scanning.

Yes, the scan always goes through the whole lobby...
So the best is to sort the Stars lobby by stake and put the desired stake(s) on top.
When the scan passes your stakes, just hit the "cancel" button to stop the scan.

I will try to fix this soon...

other Mike and Mr Snood,

Yes, Mike's suggestions were right on target. I used Stars filter to select only the stakes I was interested and the elimination of all the other stakes eliminated A LOT of hassle for me. Thanks.

Whenever I hit 'cancel' when the scan is running, the Telescope display is blanked out.

Yes, anything to release the computer while the scan is running will be great.

Thanks!

John

if by "display is blanked out" you mean all the scanned tbls disappeared I actually just found out myself why this happens Smile

telescope's scanning makes two (or more?) passes through the tables - after telescope finishes populating the scanned tbl window it then applies more filtering (whatever you picked on "filter" tab) to those in that window; if of all the tables it initially found none match your filtering options then they'd all go away, either when the scan finished by itself or you stop it with "cancel". so when you "cancel" and any tbls there disappear that means they wouldn't have been there anyway even if you let scanning finish by itself.

I sort of feel like a "cancel" should cancel everything and not just stop scanning; obv whatever gets displayed maybe has nothing to do with your search criteria and a display like that wouldn't be much different from what you could see in the poker client itself, but one big difference is that the telescope window shows the players' stats. so in that sense even an unfiltered partial list of tbls in telescope window has some value.

but I guess if the cancel has other uses (like stopping the initial scan from going into stakes you aren't interested in but still apply filtering to those you are) I guess this is the way it has to be. but I think because I always use the stars stakes filter I'd never have that situation since the only tables displayed in poker client are just those I want there.

Thanks for the heads up.

John

As Mike already set:
The Telescope "advanced" or "overall" Filter makes them disappear.
So disable or modify them. Smile
